Jaguar XS has some fierce competition

If the upcoming XS is really the XJ successor we're been hearing about then its up against a lot. With rivals like the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8 that have gone through drastic and impressive changes (some might even say class-leading), Jaguar has a lot on its plate.

Oh yeah, lets not forget that a base S-Class is just $15,000 more than a base XJ, not that much of a jump when you're already committing to $75,000.

With what we know of Jaguar's future plans, do you guys think Jaguar can still scoop up a good portion of the demand in this segment?

Depends on the XS' styling, performance and pricing. Honestly, unless you spring for a sports car most Audi and Mercedes models look pretty generic these days and lacking in excitement. Jaguar seems to be starting with a blank slate these days and with how well the new additions to their lineup is doing (XE and F-Pace), they have a very good chance of hitting a home run with the XS.

It will be a tough fight between these two guys...

I think S-Class will end up as a winner. It's too hard to compete with MB in this segment, especially with Jaguar's current situation in the market these days.

In sheer sales numbers, I don't expect the XS to surpass the Mercedes S-Class because of the badge and what it's offered with. But the XS could lure some customers away if they can undercut the S-Class while providing a similar level or performance and luxury.

Competition is healthy for automakers, maybe the XS will have dual 12.3-inch widescreens too.

Fact is, nothing can beat the S-Class, Mercedes has progressed far enough that they leave any brand no chance to catch up. But that wasn't even the right sedan to compare it to, instead it could be the Cadillac CT6, Continental, Lexus LS, and just those lower sales volume full size sedans.

Agreed. S-Class is on a very top of the mountain and it's almost unreal to push it from there. Mercedes always stays on the top of their product line, providing customers with all new technologies and features. By the way, have you seen S-class Brabus? It's a pure 888bhp evil.

The Jaguar XS doesn't have to be the best, but good enough to draw in new customers and whatever they're doing seems to be working, at least with the E-Pace's 90% new customer uptake. The XS needs to nail the interior and performance to compete against something like the Cadillac CT6.

Well Jaguars reputation is on the line if you think about given all the change they have going on right now, what the competition has to offer and just the fact they NEED a product in this segment that will keep the brand going. XF sales haven't progressed much and its a sign of the models need to take on a new direction.

Well, Jaguar has come up with the improved version of XF Sportbrake and it seems like they're expecting some really good sales of that model. Personally, I'm not sure that current market is looking for a luxury wagon and this idea looks pretty risky to me.

BMW sort of paved the way for this with them bringing the 3-Series wagon around even though sales were slow and oddly enough Audi and Mercedes started offering wagons for the segment above the 3-Series. So already we can see there is some demand.

Meet the all-road
